My evaluation for my magazine

                            Evaluation

My coursework task was to create a college magazine front cover and content page, i then decided my magazine would be targeted for the Christ the king students . For this task I had to take a pictures that I was going to include for my magazine using a canon E0s 400D, the reason why I had used this particular camera is because it would help my magazine look as professional as possible and effective in terms of the focus of the camera rather than using any other low budget camera. I had created my college magazine using adobe Photoshop cs3 which was very useful because it was very good in editing the images and font text of the front cover and content page. I am not a big fan of adobe Photoshop cs3 because It is a very complex editor for me as Photoshop is not the first choice for me if i was to edit a magazine. When it came to using the still camera, I was having difficulties with operating the camera because it was my first time using a canon E0S 400D camera and also focusing well on the subject. How ever after a few practises I started getting used with operating the camera this then started to build my confidence more in using the camera.

I believe that I could have taken a better medium shot of my subject,as my subject was to  close to the camera and because of this it blocked the background in the picture.

The headline ‘ctk.magazine’ stands for Christ the king magazine and it detonates a ‘fun’ college the reason being is because of the style of my font ,the reason why I have chosen the font to be wonky is to give a good impression of the college .In my front cover I was having difficulty pasting a barcode unto the page and so it took me quite a while to find a solution to it .Eventually my friend had helped me to paste my barcode unto my front page and I followed his steps whilst he was doing it and then I was able to do it myself .

For my contents page i thought i could have done much better in making the text look more appealing and interesting but because i didn’t know where everything were such as the effects ,texture, gradient etc it made my content page look boring and plain

I believe Photoshop helped my magazine look as effective, using a range of different design tools that it had to offer. If I was able to use photoshop as well I reckon my magazine would have looked as brilliant as ever, so far I practised on using different tools. Hopefully in my actual magazine I would have improved well.

textual analysis of college magazine

                                            Textual analysis of college magazine

The denotation of this cover is a magazine for Beloit college distributing the portraits of the 2005 graduates. It also shows 4 happy graduates so far in the cover, one of them is draped in his bright colored clothing from his native Ghana rather wearing his original graduate’s gown. The connotation of the cover is to try and persuade readers who are looking to head to university, to come and join the college.

Looking at the cover it seems like the target would be for young adults heading to adulthood as in the cover we can see these students who are young adults are graduating. The designer could have include the student wearing his native gown to welcome all ‘Ghanaians’ and other African countries not just American people

The use of Mise en scene was used in this magazine cover to give us an understanding of this magazine so that the reader could take action for example; non verbal communication, costumes lightning, rule of thirds etc

costumes
The costumes of these graduates detonates ‘success’ because for them to wear the gown it shows they have been successful they have been successful. Likewise if we see a students wearing casual wear to their graduation we don’t know whether they have been successful or not so the use of costumes really helps me know about the college. Because these students are successful it shows that the college itself is a successful college. the student wearing his Ghanaian native costume shows that all what this cover is also trying to tell us is that anyone from any ethnic background is welcome to come as we can see a student graduating with his own Ghanaian tradition gown. It is a very idea that the designer chose to include this in the cover because it does not segregate people from different ethnic background

Anchorage
The Masthead ‘Beloit College’ is written in a simple and sensible text and connotes writing from a old fashioned newspaper. The texts however look exciting but boring, this tells us that Beloit College is a very serious college and also is targeting serious students. The kicker at the bottom left explains to us what the cover is showing to us but the use of colour helps us to catch the text quickly as its very bright. This is a very god idea because if the text is In similar colours then it would be unreadable and will loose the information that they are trying to give.

Lightning
The lighting of this cover is of a high key lightning this is because its free from  dark shadows and very bright. this is very effective on the cover because it somehow gives a positive outcome of the cover at its trying to tell us ‘something positive is happening’ and this would get the reader to feel the same way about the college its like the cover is giving us a ‘taste’ of the Beloit’s college atmosphere which would then get the reader to want to be in that college. So the use of high key is very effective on the cover because its makes it very eye catchy.

Non verbal communication
The facial expressions of the students show happiness ,pride as they  all have a smile on their face. I can also realise the fact that this picture was not taken on purpose because the student at the middle does not look ready at all, his been caught of guard so this just shows that the photograph is natural the students were not forced to smile .This magazine does not copy other magazine by being ‘false’ but real. Also looking at the non verbal communication the designer is sort of in a way using the non verbal communication to communicate to the reader inviting them so to the college. it also proves to us that the college is good as they look very happy.

Rule of thirds
The use of depth of field was very effective in this cover this is because of the way the student are positioned. This is effective because of the fact that they are in a line but then we can see each and one of them in the cover making the cover much stronger. The designer could have done this too show how civilised the college is.

Depth of field
In this cover depth of field was used because we can clearly see the students but we can’t see the students in the background this is done so that the reader would not lose focus of the four main students. The background of this cover has been blurred for a purpose. It looks like the student at the back are not wearing their graduation gown which could be a reason for why they didn’t not include them as the main people in the cover, just because they don’t fit in well

questionnaire analysis

The reason why I have asked this question is to see if the different ages had similar opinions of my magazine for example one age group could agree on one thing and the other age group could agree on something completely different. So the use of this question would help me well with my target audience.

According to this chart it shows that my questionnaire was mostly answered by 17 year olds (9 people). I asked 5 under 16s four 16s and two 18s and above which turned out to be the least that answered my questionnaire

I asked this question to see the gender of the people I asked and to also see if the different gender gave similarities or difference in answering my questions. For example the females could answer one thing and the males could answer something different. This would be very useful because it would be help understand my target audiences feelings toward my questions and also what attracts their attention more .Looking at this pie charts it shows that a Littlemore of the females answered my questionnaire than the males. This is slightly a good thing as it doesn’t look as though as I asked a particular gender, making my results more fair and truthful.

I have asked this question to see whether my target audience had interest in magazine because it would help me understand the way they answered my questions for example if they didn’t have interest in magazines then looking through their answers it would relate to that and not making seem as if they didn’t want me to make a college magazine. According to this pie chart is shows that 65 % of people had interest in magazines and only 35% did not have interest in magazines. With this questionnaire it would also help to improve my future college magazine so that the people that did not have interest in magazines would start to have interest in it more.

I asked this question so that it would help me to roughly know how often people purchase a college magazine. This would be very important when Im making my college magazine because it would help me know how often I could be releasing my college magazine. My graph shows that most people purchase their magazines weekly (7 people) and less people purchase their magazines monthly(3 people)

This question would help me in creating my front cover as this shows peoples different opinions of their ideal cover .Looking at this graph it looks like more of my target audience (10 people) agreed that images grab their attention on a front cover magazine, so in my college magazine I would definitely need to include images in my front cover as it attract most of my target audience. Also it seems like the main headings does not attract people much as in my graph only 2 people agreed on it. This also tells me to not mainly focus on my headings.

This question is important as it helps me understand what my target audience would like to see in a magazine and also it would help me with my magazine as in what I need to include. According to my graph it tells me that most people (7 people) are interested in competitions and no one was interested in quizzes.

I asked this question because it would help me to know what colours attract peoples attention and it looks likes most people prefer orange and green (6 people) so this means that I would need to include those colours as it attracts my target audience more.
